Ken - sword, usually refers to the straight double-edged type

Kusari-Gama - a small sickle with a long thin chain. It can cut enemy, tangle enemy's limbs,disarm by tangling emeny's weapon with the chain. Has long reach.

Nagamaki - similar to naginata, curved blade on a pole

Shinai - bamboo practice sword

Suburito - wooden sword, usually heavy

Tanto - knife-sized short sword
To - sword, curved type, single edge

Daisho - the set of two swords, daito and shoto

Daito - great sword, larger of the daisho

Katana - same as daito, mounted edge up
Koto - "old sword," blades before about 1600

Shinken - real or "live" blade (as opposed to a false, or wooden sword. This is a term rather a weapon in itself.)

Shinto - new swords, from about 1600-1870

Shoto - small pair of daisho

Tachi - sword was made for the purpose of swinging it on a horse. It has a deep curve for a battle on a horse and swing it to the side.

Other Weapons on the List
Kunai - Looks like a spearhead with a short grip, 30cm length. Its serves as a knife, gimlet, a shovel, small hammer and a throwing dagger

Makibashi - a small spine to sting the sole of a foot.

Shuriken - daggers small enough to hide in a palm. Some are starlike shaped, and thrown with spin. Others are needlelike shaped, and thrown just like a throwing dagger. They cannot penetrate armor
Smoke bombs - make a cloud of smoke when thown

Small bombs - strong enough to break wood and rocks

kozuka/kokatana - Small knife. This is a general utility knife, used much like a pocketknife.

kogai- a hair arranger and ear wax cleaner

Spiffy weapons that were recently added to the list
Kama - Originaly a farming tool to weed plants. Because the farmers were not allowed to carry weapons they used their tools to defend themselves. This weapon is most know for its use by ninjas.

Bo - A large staff (about 2 M) used as a self defense weapon by the common people, who were not allowed to carry weapons.
Jo - A shorter staff (about 1.35 M) also used as a selfdefense weapon by the common people.
Keibo - A small stick (about 35 cm) used for fighting in small area's
Ebo - A very small stick (about 15 cm) perfect as a defense weapon and easy to cary around.
Tonfa - A nightstick with a handle attached to the side of it. many police forces have adopted it to replace the old police baton (nightstick).

Nunchaku - Two sticks connected by either a small cord or chain. Originally it was used as a farming tool to thresh grain. and the farmers started using them as weapons to defend themselves
Jutte - Jutte are implements that were used by the samurai as well as the feudal era police. They were used for trapping the blades edged weapons as well as jabbing, striking and trapping fingers.
Sai - The sai is a two pronged knife used to catch weapons and pull them out of their wielder's grip. It is usually not sharpened and a more defensive weapon
Shuko - Shuko or "Ninja claws" are nasty weapons used to cause nasty lacerations on your opponent. Against popular belief climbing was only a secondary use.
Tessen: The tessen is a metal fan, there are two types one which is solid metal, and the other witch has metal strips, with canvas or fabric in between that folds out into a fan. The folding ones sometimes had razors lining the outer edge so it could be used to cut. They were also used by samurai to signal commands during battle
Ninja-to - This is the famous sword of the ninja. It has a straight blade approximately 19 inches long. The tsuba or sword guard is usually square in design, and the end of the saya or scabbard is usually pointed. By this design the ninja could stick his sword in the ground and use the handle as a step to climb up to something out of reach, then the ninja would pull up his sword with a string or rope previously attached.
